Installing Quicktime disables Aero
I recently installed Quicktime on Windows Vista. It all went well but for one minor detail: once Quicktime was installed, Windows Vista Aero was disabled and it defaulted Vista to using the Windows Vista Basic Scheme. Eek. If this happens to you, here's how I got it working again.
- Open Quicktime. Open the preferences by selecting "Preferences" from the Edit menu and selecting "QuickTime Preferences". In the dialog box that gets opened, select the "Advanced" tab.
- In the "Video" section (third from the top), check the "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" option and then click the "Apply" and "OK" buttons at the bottom of the dialog box.
At a minimum, you then need to quit Quicktime completely by closing the program and removing it from the system tray. You may need to restart your machine completely for this change to take effect. But if you do this, you'll be able to use Windows Vista Aero, even after installing Quicktime.
