Getting air out of freezer bags

If you store food in the freezer, it lasts longer and keeps better if you get all of the air out of the bag before you put it in the freezer. They make machines that can get the air out for you (Ronco to the rescue) but they are expensive and it seems a little silly to own such a device. What I find works well is a straw. Put your food in the freezer bag and insert the straw on one side of the bag. Seal the ziploc across the entire bag except for where the straw is. Squeeze the bag to get most of the air out. Then, well, suck. It surprising how much air you can suck out of one of these freezer bags. Once you get all the air out, quickly remove the straw and seal the bag. You've got yourself food that will keep longer and better in the freezer, and you didn't have to spend a bunch of money to get it.
