Save energy on your hot water

Hot water heaters are one of the biggest energy users in a house. There are two easy ways to save some of that energy:

1. Turn down the temperature on your hot water heater. The less the water needs to be heated, the less energy required. Pretty obvious.

2. Get a blanket for your hot water heater, they lose a lot of energy to the surrounding air. Producing that energy by heating a big tank of water is not very efficent. Minimize the loss and save more energy.

Most hot water heaters have a knob that allows you to adjust the temperature. It's usually near the bottom where the gas comes in.

Another good idea along those lines... most have an adjustment for going on vacation that sets the temperature very low. If you are going to be out of town, set it there since there's no use in heating all that water while you are out of town.

If you want to really save some energy, you should get rid of your standard hot water heater and go with a tankless model.
